Cha Eun-woo cast as male lead in ‘Rookie Historian Goo Hae-ryung’

Fantagio Entertainment announced on March 4 that singer-actor Cha Eun-woo of the Korean boy group ASTRO has been cast in the upcoming sageuk Rookie Historian Goo Hae-ryung, which tells the story of a female historian who fights and overcomes the prejudice against women in the male-dominated profession.

Rookie Historian Goo Hae-ryung is a historical drama about women in the 19th century who were not given the recognition they deserve as historians. Shin Se-kyung (Bride of the Water God) will play the titular character who will empower the women in her time as she tries her best to do her job amid the existing Confucian belief that women are inferior to men.

Playing the potential love interest of Goo Hae-ryung is Cha Eun-woo’s character, Prince Yi Rim, who is second in line for the throne. He lives a dual life as a lonely prince who has never dated anyone and a popular romance novelist in Hanyang (old name of Korea’s capital, Seoul). His life will change when he meets the rookie historian and learns about love from her.

A newbie in the industry, Cha Eu-woo made his acting debut in mainstream drama in 2017 through the fantasy comedy The Best Hit. In the following year, he landed his breakout role as a smart and intelligent college student in My ID is Gangnam Beauty.

Rookie Historian Goo Hae-ryung will be directed by Kang Il-soo of The Land Of The Wind and Solomon’s Perjury, whose writer will be reuniting with him to handle the screenplay. It is scheduled to premiere in July.
