On March 6, it was reported that IU and Yeo Jin-goo have taken on the lead roles in tvN’s Hotel del Luna, a new fantasy series by celebrated writers, the Hong sisters.
The show’s title is a name of a hotel in the heart of Seoul, which is hidden from humans and reveals itself only to wandering ghosts and spirits. IU will take on the role of Jeong Man-wol, a greedy con woman who has been condemned to spend the rest of her life at Hotel del Luna as punishment for her sins. Despite her delicate and beautiful outward appearance, she is mean and capricious.
Last year, IU starred in tvN’s My Mister opposite Lee Sun-kyun and won the hearts of viewers for her portrayal of a cold-hearted woman who has grown up in abject poverty and does not know love. Hotel del Luna will mark an interesting change in the kind of roles IU has done so far.
Yeo Jin-goo, meanwhile, has been cast as the elite hotelier Koo Chan-sung, a perfectionist with an obsessive personality. Though on the surface he comes across as rational, he is actually really gullible and weak-hearted. Koo works hard to become the youngest assistant manager of a huge hotel chain, but unexpected circumstances lead him to become the manager of a ghost hotel.
Yeo has emerged as one of the most popular TV actors this year, with his show, The Crowned Clown, recently concluding with a stellar 10% rating.
Interestingly, the story of Hotel del Luna was written by the Hong sisters in 2013, sort of an early draft of Master’s Sun, which was later developed into a hit series starring Gong Hyo-jin and So Ji-sub. The new drama will be directed by PD Oh Choong-hwan, whose past projects include Doctors and While You Were Sleeping. It is set to air in the second half of the year.
