Actor Jang Hyuk will be appearing in JTBC’s new historical action drama My Country to portray a notable figure in Korean history, as confirmed by his agency SidusHQ on February 21. The actor is the latest addition to the main cast composed of Yang Se-jong, Woo Do-hwan, and Seolhyun.

My Country revolves around political events at the time when Goryeo’s regime is about to be overthrown by prominent leaders who will later establish the Joseon dynasty. Jang Hyuk (Bad Papa) will take on the role of Lee Bang-won, a prince who helps his father take over Goryeo and build Joseon. While his contribution is deemed worthy of the crown, his father favors his half-brother to succeed to the throne, driving him to strive hard—even if it meant hurting others—to get his rightful place. The drama will follow Lee Bang-won’s painful journey to get the crown. In the context of Korean history, he became the third king and was called Taejong of Joseon.

This is not the first time for Jang Hyuk to portray Lee Bang-won. In fact, he played the same role for The Age of Innocence, a film that was released in 2015. Since Lee Bang-won is a famous figure in Korean history, he did a lot of research for the role. For My Country, however, the actor aims to show a different side of Lee Bang-won as the antagonist.

Meanwhile, AOA’s Seolhyun (Orange Marmaladewill play the role of a smart and progressive Joseon woman while Yang Se-jong (Thirty But Seventeen) and Woo Do-hwan (Great Seducer) take on the role of a military commander’s son and an aspiring military officer, respectively.

My Country will be aired on JTBC in the second half of 2019.
