Actors Jo Jung-suk and Yoon Shi-yoon had been confirmed to headline the upcoming SBS sageuk titled Ugeumchi, which will center on two half-brothers and take place at the end of the 19th century.

The new series will tell the story of two brothers who share the same father and get separated during an uprising in Joseon known as the Donghak Peasant Revolution in 1894 where the leaders of Donghak—a syncretic and nationalistic religion that opposed Western culture and embraced equality of all people—and the peasants of southwestern Korea joined forces together against the government in calling for social reforms. This rebellion sparked the first Sino-Japanese War from 1894 to 1895.

The retelling of the said rebellion will feature Jo Jung-suk (Two Cops) and Yoon Shi-yoon (Your Honor) as siblings on different sides of the conflict. Jo Jung-suk will take the role of the older brother Baek Yi-kang, the illegitimate son of a notorious and wealthy government official and his wife’s slave. Described as someone with a sharp look and cold smile, he seems sarcastic and likes to pick a fight.

On the other hand, Yoon Shi-yoon will play the role of the younger brother named Baek Yi-hyun. Although he is the youngest son of the Baek family, he holds the title as the first “rightful son” born to the legitimate wife. He has studied abroad in Japan and become noble and graceful in both his looks and behavior.

Rounding out the main cast of the drama is Han Ye-ri (Switch: Change the World), who will play the only child of a powerful family. Her name is Song Ja-in, a charismatic and courageous peddler who runs a shop where she trades goods for money.

Ugeumchi will be directed by PD Shin Kyung-soo of the award-winning historical dramas Tree With Deep Roots and Six Flying Dragons and penned by screenwriter Jung Hyun-min of the acclaimed series Jung Do-jeon. It is set to be broadcast early this year as a Wednesday-Thursday drama.
