Actor Kang Ha-neul may still be in the military, but he is already carefully selecting his first project after his discharge this spring.
On February 18, reports that Kang Ha-neul is a top choice to star in the new KBS drama When The Camellia Blooms have surfaced. In response to the reports, a representative from the actor’s agency, SEM Company, commented, “It is true Kang Ha-neul received an offer to star in the drama. He is carefully reviewing it, but nothing is confirmed yet.”
If Kang Ha-neul accepts the role, he will play the character of Yong Shik, a policeman who is simple and naive but also has an unexplainable charm. If Yong Shik is the principal male character, Kang’s participation in the series will mark the first time he will be playing the male protagonist in a mainstream prime time drama. The actor is best known for his roles in The Heirs, Misaeng, and Moon Lovers: Scarlet Heart Ryeo, his last TV series before he entered the military.
In talks to play Kang Ha-neul’s love interest in the drama is Gong Hyo-jin (Jealousy Incarnate), who has been courted to play the role of Dong Baek (which means camellia in Korean), with whom Yong Shik is in love.
Kang Ha-neul entered the military on September 11, 2017, and is currently serving under the Republic of Korea Capital Defense Command as a military police officer. The actor has been actively participating in musicals even inside the military. He is set to be discharged on May 23, 2019.
Slated to premiere in the second half of 2019, When The Camellia Blooms will be written by Im Sang-choon of Fight For My Way and directed by Cha Young-hoon of Are You Human Too?. It is a romantic comedy with hints of suspense and thriller.
