Netflix Korea confirmed through an Instagram post on February 14 that the production team of Kingdom’s season 2 has officially begun shooting on February 12, just four days after the script reading for the series was conducted.

Kim Seung-hun, Kingdom‘s director, was present at the table read, along with writer Kim Eun-hee and all the actors. However, Kim will not direct the entire season 2 since he is in charge of the first episode only and Park In-je, a movie director and writer, will helm the remaining episodes. Park directed the 2017 political drama film The Mayor, starring Choi Min-sik.

Leads Ju Ji-hoon, Bae Doo-na and Ryu Seung-ryong are returning to reprise their roles, and two new additions have been made to the cast—Park Byung-eun (Your Honor) and Kim Tae-hoon (Hold Me Tight). During the script reading, all the actors were in good spirits and eager to start shooting because of the amazing reactions to season 1.

Kingdom is a mystery thriller set in the Joseon era and follows the crown prince (played by Ju Ji-hoon), who is accused of treason, as he goes on a mission to clear his name and learn the secret behind the mysterious condition ailing his father, the king. The accusation made against the prince stems from the power tussle involving him and the prime minister (Ryu Seung-ryong), who is intent on destroying him and seizing power.

Meanwhile, Bae Doo-na plays a nurse who witnesses the transformation of her patients into zombies that feed on the flesh of the living. She joins the prince as he struggles to reclaim the throne while fighting off the bloodthirsty monsters. The first season of the show ended on a thrilling cliffhanger, leading to a lot of interest in season 2, which is expected to be released in 2020.
