PD Jang Tae-yoo of My Love From The Star and Tree With Deep Roots has confirmed that he will be making his directorial comeback with Hyena, an upcoming drama which is courting Song Hye-kyo and Ju Ji-hoon for the lead roles.
Hyena tells the stories of lawyers who work for the top 1% of the society’s upper class. However, it is described as an unusual legal drama in that the law is used as a “weapon of survival” by the main characters.
The award-winning and Baeksang nominated director revealed on Thursday that Hyena is currently at the stage of script development and rookie writer Kim Roo-ri will be the one to pen the entire screenplay of the drama.
Kim Roo-ri won the Excellence Award in the 2013 SBS script contest and wrote Ace, a 2015 SBS drama starring Lee Pil-mo and Kim Min-ji. She will be making her first foray into prime time Korean dramas with Hyena.
Jang also said that Hyena is a “really fun drama” that will be “different from previous legal dramas” and have a character-driven story. The main roles have been offered to A-list actors Song Hye-kyo and Ju Ji-hoon.
Song Hye-kyo (Encounter) has been courted to play a “true hyena” who does not hesitate to cross the boundaries between right and wrong in order to survive. Ju Ji-hoon (Item), meanwhile, is in talks to portray an elite lawyer who is very confident in his abilities.
Hyena will be Jang Tae-yoo’s first project in five years since My Love From The Star, the 2015 sci-fi romantic series starring Jun Ji-hyun and Kim Soo-hyun which became a cultural phenomenon and achieved enormous success in South Korea and abroad.
The director signed up in 2017 to direct the supposedly pre-produced drama Four Men but he, along with Park Hae-jin and Nana, ended up leaving the project.
Hyena will premiere in November on KBS2.
